This file is a holding file for "snippet lists" of sometimes random listings of merchant names grouped in quite disparate and/or unconnected timeframes. Generally grouped by date, and/or region, the lists may in time prompt further comment or research, in which case, they will be deleted from this file and placed elsewhere. For the time being, as lists, they will simply rest here, given in descending chronology, mostly uncommented.

On Bristol, from 1497

Follows a list derived from article, Evan Jones (University of Bristol), 'The Matthew of Bristol and the Financiers of John Cabot's 1497 Voyage to North America', English Historical Review, Vol. CXXI, No. 492, 2006., pp. 778-793. Some of the merchants backing Cabot's adventure included: Bristol merchant John Day (aka Hugh Say) wrote a letter to "Grand Admiral of Spain", Christopher Columbus, about Cabot's voyage on Matthew. Letters Patent (licence) for the voyage from Henry VIII. Participation of Bristol merchants Robert Thorne and Hugh Elyot has been claimed but is not yet proved. Possibly, William Clerk of London.

Known merchants of Bristol (1497-1513) not necessarily connected with Cabot, named in Jones' article, include: Hugh Eliet (sic), Edmund Griffeths, Richard Hobie, Robert Barrero, John Shipman (at times with John Ware), William Jeffereis (sic), Humphrey Brown, Roger Dawes, William Hurste, John Grene (sic), John Meysam, Thomas Hawkens (sic), William Thorne, John Edee (sic), William Aphowell, John Jansie, Robert Rowlowe, John Qwirke, Thomas Badcok (sic), Thomas Aphowell, William Estbie, John Messam, Martyn Pollard, John Collas, Nicholas Browne, William Shipman, Robert Buntre, Thomas Dale, John Hall, William Geffreys (sic), John Graunte, William Lane, John Spacheford, Robert Butre, John Drews, John Messan, Humphrey Hosgrove.
