Code-red. He is son1 by wife2. In Welsh, History of Hong Kong, p. 90 he acts for Jardine-Matheson as MP/banker. He invests in AACo in Pemberton. Director of NZCo on Bloomfield on Wakefield. He is on 1834 c/tee London for female emigration. Cassis City bankers sees him die in 1871. He is a considerable personality, a partner of Smith-Payne-Smiths, acquired land on vast scale, MP for Hertfordshire 1835-1847. Tried to help Lionel Rothschild sit in Parlt, had varied interests in Aust, NZ and Far East, led him to found Smith Magniac and Co., foreunners of Matheson and Co., the London agents of Jardine/Matheson of Hong Kong, he is partner in Smiths from 1834-1845, opted to leave Smith and stay with Magniac, and ends ruined for unclear reasons. See Atchison PhD thesis, he is first chairman of the Aust Agric Co. If he is MP for Chichester and an old friend of Angela Burdett Coutts, then he is the one (See Runciman on the White Rajahs, p. 148), who when James the Rajah was "toying" with an idea of putting Sarawak under the protection of Belgium, and was negotiating with the heir to the Belgian throne, Duke of Brabant/Leopold II, Burdett Coutts thought the idea silly, the problem taken up by John Abel Smith, MP for Chichester, arranged that the Gov of Singapore, Colonel Cavanagh, should visit Kuching and send in a report on the feasibility of the protectorate. Stenton, Brit Partls, Vol. 1, p. 353. Listed in Adams, Fatal Necessity, on NZCo. founder of Smith/Magniac.
He is chief partner of Smith /Payne /Smiths from 1835-1845; See Keswick on Jardines, pp. 24ff. He is a partner of Hollingworth Magniac, qv. On "free tea" by 1837 see Kynaston, City of London, p. 112. See notes to John Pirie, qv. See Broeze article, Imperial Axis in Push from the Bush. See W. E. Cheong, Jardine/M, p. 243 and p. 258, Note 20, which has that in March 1840 when Jardine was back in London, John Abel Smith asked him to leave the China house and join Magniac and Smith, Jardine told Matheson this is the first he ever knew of them wishing him, Jardine, to join Magniac and Smith.
To make other connections, see S. B. Singh on India Agency Houses, and Greenburg on the same topic, also Leighton-Boyce re Smiths the Bankers. Note that Chand cited elsewhere claimed that about 1760, money taken from Bengal fuelled take off of the Industrial Revolution in England, and that some of this claim can be attached to the career of the merchant bank in London, set up in 1758, Smith, Payne and Smiths, Payne here being John Payne qv the outgoing chairman of the East India Company, in a timeframe treated by Lucy Sutherland (EICo in C18th Politics) re the squabble between new EICo chairman Laurence Sulivan and Clive of India. From 1769, Sulivan was involved with his Madras partners in developing links with "Malaysia", see titles on career of founder of Penang, Francis Light (whose son later surveyed Adelaide Sth Australia). This man's ancestors in Nottingham had been pro-Cromwell and were later rewarded. This man see Smiths the Bankers, p. 272 assisted Baron Lionel de Rothschild into the House of Commons in July 1858. His family did not appreciate his involvements in far eastern trade, as he was a founder partner of Smith, Magniac and Co, East India and China merchants, which had premises next door to the family bank. He had a door connecting both premises to avoid going out onto Lombard Street. He was with the family bank for only 10 years. see Smith the Bankers p. 272 re his interest as a founder partner in Smith, Magniac and Co, the forerunner of Jardine, Matheson and Co. etc. See Broeze on Brooks, p. 32ff. See also title on Smiths the bankers. Pemberton, London Connection, p. 389. He is of 37 Chester Square, London. Brooks's. eldest son of J. Smith Esq, Banker of Blendon Hall, Kent, who sat for Buckinghamshire in 1832; by second wife, dr of Lt-Col Tucker. He was a friend of Baron Lionel de Rothschild, the Rothschilds had opened an account with Rothschilds (?, or Smith, Payne and Smiths) soon after the Battle of Waterloo. His temperament was unsuited to the family bank. He is said to have dissipated much of a considerable patrimony on the fringes of empire, in the east, in the Antipodes, in railway and colonial development. He had interests in Aust and NZ, he was a founder partner in Smith, Magniac and Co, the forerunners of Jardine Matheson and Co. He left the family bank in 1845. Book on Smiths the Bankers. Stenton, Vol. 1, Brit Partls, pp. 352-353. He was with the family bank for only 10 years. see Smith the Bankers p. 272 re his interest as a founder partner in Smith, Magniac and Co, the forerunner of Jardine, Matheson and Co. etc. See Broeze on Brooks, p. 32ff.
